Dear Mr. Moss;
Your current issue was extremely disappointing. First of all, why only 2 presidential candidates
on your cover? Must you, like the corporate media, also marginalize and ignore third party candidates?
Your readers deserve better.
You feature propaganda from the League of Conservation voters (basically a front group for the Democrats).
Additionally, the information you printed from them was incorrect: Obama now favors off shore drilling,
he voted to fund Yucca Mountain, he promulgates fantasies of “clean coal” and he now supports nuclear power.
Here are some more of his anti-environmental votes you conveniently left out:
6/23/05: Obama voted for cloture on HR 6, considered by environmental groups to
be a sellout of the environment to the nuclear, coal and automotive industries.
It provides for rewards for unsafe, pollution-ridden fuel sources and car makers
who wanted to continue making inefficient cars. It also gave Bush the power to
destroy the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge. (Roll call 152)
6/28/05: Obama voted to pass HR 6, the sellout of the environment to the nuclear,
coal-burning and automotive industries discussed above. (Roll call 158)
7/01/05: Obama voted for H.R. 2419, termed “The Nuclear Bill” by environmental and
peace groups. It provided billions for nuclear weapons activities, including nuclear
bunker buster bombs. It contains full funding for Yucca Mountain, a threat to food and
water in California, Nevada, Arizona and states across America. (Roll call 172)
7/29/05: Obama voted for the conference report on the Energy Bill (HR 6), which was a boon
to Halliburton and subjected Americans to the risk of exposure to lethal levels of radiation
and mercury poisoning. (Roll call 213)
11/14/05: Obama voted again for “The Nuclear Bill.” This was the vote on the Conference Report
on the Nuclear Bill (HR 2419). As the House had already approved the Conference Report, this was
the last opportunity for anyone in Congress to say “no” to this disastrous bill which threatened
California’s water and food supply and provides billions of dollars for the kind of nuclear weapons
activities violative of international law. (Roll Call 321)
3/27/06: Obama voted to confirm pro-nuclear war profiteer Dennis Spurgeon as Assistant Secretary of
Energy. Spurgeon’s appointment will likely lead to Chernobyls in the U.S. and to more wars. (Roll call 76)
5/26/06: Obama, again, opposed environmentalists in voting for the cloture on anti-environmentalist Dirk Kempthorne,
who was nominated for Secretary of the Interior. (Roll Call 161)
That you would promote such a pathetic record while deliberately ignoring Ralph Nader, a true environmentalist, a crusader
for the environment for his whole career, is shameful and destructive. The EPA, also featured in this issue, exists largely
because of Ralph Nader. He was instrumental in the passage of the Clean Air Act, and the Clean Water Act, and he has always
been against nuclear energy and for renewable energy (and not the sham of ethanol promulgated by both your cover boys).
Ralph Nader is unquestionably the environmental champion in the field.
No, Mr. Moss, though a reader of “E”, I, a serious environmentalist, am not at all excited at the prospect of Obama as the
next president. I know that he and his Democratic Leadership Council buddies are in the very pockets of the multinational
corporations that are directly responsible for the abysmal state of our world. I know that as long as people insist on deluding
themselves that the Democrats are fundamentally any different than the Republicans, we are doomed to more of the environmental
disasters brought to us by the Clinton administration: passage of the salvage logging rider, the continuation of the use of
methyl bromide, the weakening of the Endangered Species Act, the lowering of grazing fees on land, subsidizing Florida's sugar
industry, weakening the Safe Drinking Water Act, reversing the ban on the production and importation of PCBs, and allowing the
export of Alaskan oil, NAFTA…. Yes, Democrats are adept at doing the bidding of their corporate masters while “talking green.”
Enabled by the submissive, compromised, environmental groups (and publications) who cheer them on, they destroy our irreplaceable
environment. You are aiding them.
It is worth noting that David Brower, while dying, made it a point to vote for Ralph Nader because Brower, a venerable environmentalist,
faced the reality of Democratic betrayal and complicity. He realized that the spine of the corporate duopoly must be broken if we want
this earth to be protected. By championing Obama, and green washing his abysmal record you simply strengthen the death grip of the corporate
parties on the environment.

Opinion ::: Thank you , Cara , for telling it like it is -
We all hope for " something better " from the Obama Administration after 8 years
